Today we will take a look at conditional statements. There are five types of conditionals, and we’ll see them all. But today our focus is on Zero and First Conditionals.

Zero Conditionals

In Zero Conditionals, the two actions are understood to occur at the same time. The verb tenses are the same on both sides.

  • If something happens, then another thing also happens.

Example:

  • If Ukraine agrees to the conditions set forth by Russia to end the conflict, then it loses a third of its territory.”

First Conditionals

First Conditionals are also known as Future Conditionals, as they express a possible situation in the future. They predict a likely result in the future.

  • If something happens, then another thing will/will not happen.

Example:

  • If talks over the next month lead to a deal with Vladimir Putin, concerned European countries will conclude that both parties in the war are about to reach a ceasefire.”
