Today we will continue to take a look at conditional statements, with our focus on Second and Third Conditionals.

Second Conditionals

Second Conditionals are used to present hypothetical or unlikely situations. They can also be used to describe unreal or improbable situations both in the present or in the future.

  • If something happened, then another thing would happen.

Example:

  • If Argentine governments made correct economic decisions, the country would not endure a decade-long financial instability.”

Third Conditionals

In Third Conditionals, also known as Past Conditionals, we imagine an alternative past to describe an imaginary situation that did not happen in the past.

  • If something had happened, then another thing would have happened.

Example:

  • If Domingo Cavallo had followed Brazil’s plan to tackle inflation, Argentina’s economy would have passed the last 25 years with much less turmoil.”
