Today we will take a look at subject-verb agreement. We will present some sentences and give you the reasoning behind the agreement.

- “Each of the representatives has been selected personally by the president.”

  • Reasoning: when using each, every, or none, the verb will always be in the singular form.


- “Neither the Senators nor our State Representative wants to approve the bill.”

  • Reasoning: when using neither…nor, either…or, or not only…but also, the verb agrees with the noun closest to it.

- “Many of the member states of the UN have declared the full support for the UNSC resolution.”

  • Reasoning: many of is a quantifier; with quantifiers, the verb agrees with the noun in the prepositional phrase.

- “The sheer number of voters who turned out at the polls was a historical record for elections in the USA.”

  • Reasoning: when using the number of, always use a singular verb.

- “A number of very prominent governmental officials attend this gala event every year.”

  • Reasoning: when using a number of, the verb will always be in the plural form.
