Today we will take a look at some cases (and rules) of subject-verb agreement.


1. Weights and measures are always singular.

  • “Five hundred million euros in expenditures is a bit of an understatement for this type of project.”

2. When using “the number of”, always use a singular verb.

  • “The sheer number of voters who turned out at the polls was a historical record for elections in the USA.”

3. The term “news” is a concept is always takes a singular verb.

  • “The international news reports daily on vital issues concerning the survival of humankind.”
