Time really doesn’t have any units that are inherent to it, but we break it up into chunks so that we can describe and measure it. We get the units we use to measure it from the periodicity of the daily and yearly cycles caused by our position relative to our sun. Time is also not something we can see. We observe changes that happen as time passes, but we can never see time itself. This means that it’s a wonderful abstract concept that has led to some pretty cool visualizations. The most common way of showing year-scale time is with the standard monthly calendar. XKCD put out this one that has a slight twist. Since our delineation of time comes from our position relative to the sun, it makes sense to use the sun in the visual representation. This Solar Calendar for 2011 by kirstinmck shows when the sun is up for the northern hemisphere. Since this calendar shows sun cycles, your location on Earth also matters.

Sometimes it seems like the only real constant about these calendar experiments is how many people try to break out of boring grids. There’s a kind of delight in seeing months spiral or form arcs—it’s a nudge away from the rote way we’re trained to march through time. If you’ve ever actually used a radial or circular calendar for more than, say, two weeks (I haven’t), it’s both novel and kind of awkward. You lose the quick handiness of seeing “Oh, the 10th is a Friday,” but what you get is a bit of poetic dizziness. Maybe that’s the secret: it’s not really about actual usability, it’s about getting your brain to dance around familiar patterns for a minute.

That said, the old blocks-and-rows format isn’t going anywhere. Most people just want something that works when they’re hunting for a meeting or birthday. The visual fireworks are more for inspiration, for getting a fresh look at something utterly ordinary. Of course, these creative layouts appeal to designers and the chronically organized alike—people who treat the year itself as a kind of canvas. At the end of it all, every calendar, no matter how zany, ends up quietly tracking the same relentless, ordinary days piling up.

Solar Calendar 2011 infographic by kirstinmck.

Kirstinmck has also done a Lunar Calendar for 2011 that shows how the moon cycle lines up with our monthly and yearly cycles.

Lunar Calendar 2011 infographic by kirstinmck.

And she also made one for 2010 that combines the sun and moon, but breaks them down month by month.

     Solar infographic
