It\u2019s true that it never really went anywhere, but after the early-90s hype surrounding VR technology, it did fall into the periphery for a number of years, with limited use from a business or consumer perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now, with widespread affordability and mass-market penetration, all that\u2019s changed. VR \u2013 and its cousin augmented reality (AR) \u2013\u00a0are simply a part of the equation of doing business. The global AR market is expected to grow from $11 billion in 2018 to over $60 billion in 2025 and the VR market is expected to jump from $7 billion to $34 billion in the same timeframe, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/augmented-reality-ar-and-virtual-reality-vr-market-worth-6055-billion-usd-and-3408-billion-usd-by-2023-675413083.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">according to a recent report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These technologies have demonstrated interesting applications in training, from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vrs.org.uk\/virtual-reality-military\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">military<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2017\/11\/12\/virtual-reality-is-reshaping-medical-training-and-treatment\/#sm.0001t9df1u1cpndpduzs858us14ih\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">medical<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and they\u2019ve obviously been used to market to consumers by nurturing brands and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalmarketinginstitute.com\/the-insider\/14-09-16-how-virtual-reality-can-boost-a-brands-storytelling\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">using virtual storytelling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But what about VR\/AR\u2019s role in a B2B content marketing context?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This was a question that came up in last week\u2019s webinar, <a href=\"https:\/\/pages.scribblelive.com\/Boost-Your-Content-Reach-and-Engagement-RP.html?utm_source=resources&amp;utm_medium=website&amp;utm_campaign=sej_webinar\">Boost your Content Reach and Engagement<\/a>, presented jointly by Rock Content and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Search Engine Journal<\/a>. While it is odd to think about how VR might be applicable in a B2B context, there are a few examples of exceptional execution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Cisco launches virtual trade show<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In this example, provided through a great <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.b2bmarketing.net\/en\/free-downloadable-guides\/6-great-examples-vr-and-ar-b2b-marketing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">B2B Marketing asset<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, we can see how Cisco worked with a 3D interactive sales and marketing company to build out an immersive product catalogue. It\u2019s like a virtual trade show that gives users a clear sense of what products actually look like, and enables users to virtually \u201cwalk around\u201d and engage with their offering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not every company is going to have the resources of Cisco, of course, but the concept of the virtual trade show is something that\u2019s trickling down, little by little, into smaller businesses. Startups in the SaaS world, for example, have started using simplified VR tours as part of onboarding or demo processes\u2014not quite as flashy as a comprehensive virtual expo, but sometimes that\u2019s enough to leave an impression. It makes you wonder what will happen when headsets shrink down further in price. Will we eventually have \u201cvirtual booths\u201d for everyone, even in those niche industries that usually get tucked away in the back of the real convention center?<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. VR in the food processing industry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In another great example of VR leveraged in a B2B context, VERYX, which manufacturers food processing systems, created a very detailed VR view of its digital food sorting platform. Take a look <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DlY-jWtM1kk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These digital experiences can seem a bit overkill\u2014until you try one, and then suddenly it\u2019s clear why physical tours or in-person demos sometimes don\u2019t cut it. Decision-makers can drop into these virtual setups, poke around, and get a sense of machinery or workflow without hopping on a plane. There\u2019s also a hidden upside: smaller firms that can\u2019t afford a sprawling sales force still have a fighting shot at impressing international prospects, without ever leaving their office. Hard to ignore, really.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. How AR enhances medical device uses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ottobock makes and supplies prosthetic limbs, and it sought a way to display its products and come across as the innovator it is, from a brand perspective. It used an AR application to allow it to show CGI versions of three specific prosthetic products and enable salespeople to show, within a demo, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3zSgjhZ-cIc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how an upper limb prosthesis worked and articulated<\/a>.
