We all know <a href=\"https:\/\/pingback.com\/en\/resources\/instagram-becoming-tiktok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this game<\/a>, so it was a matter of time to see how the most popular digital trend would say hello to Meta\u2019s social channel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following last month\u2019s announcement to <a href=\"https:\/\/pingback.com\/en\/resources\/instagram-update-benefits-original-content\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">change its ranking algorithm to benefit original content<\/a>, Instagram head <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CdVsX5AA4tw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adam Mosseri announced a new step in the valuing of content creators on Instagram<\/a>. He said <strong>the platform is starting to test ways for<\/strong> <strong>users to share NFTs<\/strong> that they made or bought in their channels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The tests already began with only a group of US users being able to display NFTs in their feed, stories and messages. We are going to analyze it in this article.<\/p>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/ionfiles.scribblecdn.net\/scripts\/ionizer-1.3.min.js\" data-ion-embed-hash=\"eyJ1cmwiOiIvL2ludGVyYWN0aXZlLnJvY2tjb250ZW50LmNvbS90aGViZWF0LWJhbm5lcj9faW9uX3RhcmdldD1lbWJlZC0xLjAiLCJpZCI6Il9pb25faW9uaXplcl8xNjQzMzkxMzYyMzY3IiwiYXBwZW5kUXVlcnkiOmZhbHNlfQ==\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Decentralized power on a centralized platform<\/h2>\n<p>According to Mosseri: \u201cIt\u2019s a limited number of people to start with, and there are many more functionalities that we\u2019re going to need to build over time, but we wanted to start small and learn more from the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But NFTs and Blockchain technologies are all about distributing trust and power. So, how can Instagram, a centralized platform that is part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10336553\/Facebook-Americas-trusted-social-media-network-according-new-poll.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">company that isn\u2019t on good trust terms with its users<\/a>, eliminate the tension between those fundamental aspects?<\/p>\n<p>Mosseri said that one of the reasons why they\u2019re starting with small tests is that they are working on that. In his words: \u201cWe want to make sure we work out how to embrace those tenets of distributed trust and distributed power, despite the fact that we are, yes, a centralized platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At first, the supported blockchains for showcasing NFT on the platform are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/business\/2022\/05\/08\/metas-instagram-to-support-nfts-from-ethereum-polygon-solana-flow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ethereum and Polygon<\/a>, and the third-party wallets compatible for use are Rainbow, MetaMask and Trust Wallet.<\/p>\n<p>On a practical level, most average Instagram users probably don\u2019t care if the platform is centralized or not\u2014at least, not until they realize what it means for ownership or revenue. For creators who have already felt platform whiplash (when algorithms shift or accounts get flagged with little recourse), the promise of distributed trust sounds really appealing. But bridging the distance between what\u2019s technically possible and what corporate platforms will actually allow? That\u2019s still a gray area, and you can sense the unspoken anxiety around it every time a big new feature is teased.<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, it\u2019s a bit of a mind-bender watching these Web3 ideas get filtered through the old-school social media machine. The collision between \u201ceverybody owns their stuff!\u201d and \u201cMeta owns the playground\u201d can feel a little absurd if you stop to think about it too long. If Instagram actually gives creators more say over their digital goods\u2014okay, maybe that\u2019s progress. But there\u2019s still a real question mark over how far Meta will let that autonomy go before it bumps up against their need for control. You can almost picture the boardroom debates already: \u201cdecentralization, but make it Meta-safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also the subtle mood shift whenever these announcements go live. Some creators get hyped, imagining new avenues for income or exposure, while others roll their eyes, expecting the same old story with new jargon. You can\u2019t blame them; every year brings a shiny new feature promising to level the playing field, and, yet, power users always seem to find the loopholes first. Whether NFTs actually allow everyday people to \u201cown\u201d their creations on Instagram\u2014or if it just turns into another badge for influencers and brands\u2014remains to be seen. Feels like we\u2019re all peering over the edge of another experiment that could go either way.<\/p>\n<p>Although Instagram isn\u2019t the first social platform to support NFTs (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/1\/20\/22893502\/nft-twitter-profile-picture-crypto-wallet-opensea-coinbase-right-click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as Twitter added NFTs to the timeline as hexagon-shaped profile pictures<\/a>), we know how powerful the brand itself is, so, bringing the technology to the biggest social media platform can do a lot for this niche of creators, which may be a game changer for the creator economy, and to transform NFTs into a popular type of content <a href=\"https:\/\/pingback.com\/en\/resources\/nft-benefits-for-brands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">after growing more than 11,000% last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>People tend to underestimate how quickly these kinds of integrations can shift user behavior. Back when Stories launched, Snapchat diehards laughed, but now it\u2019s hard to find anyone who doesn\u2019t tap through at least a few a day. NFTs on Instagram might seem a bit gimmicky for the skeptics, but if the platform decides to reward or highlight this type of content, you can bet even folks who weren\u2019t paying attention to Web3 will give it a shot, if only out of curiosity or FOMO. Whether this will turn into real engagement (or just another passing trend) will depend on how smooth Instagram makes the experience and whether creators actually find value beyond the hype.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What kind of changes can we expect on the platform and on the big picture?<\/h2>\n<p>Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/zuck\/posts\/10114468245426981\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced that soon the feature will be available on Facebook<\/a>, and also that the company is working with augmented reality to bring life to 3D NFTs.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, content creation is reaching another level and generating great opportunities for creators.
