But, with all these changes, this platform is becoming oddly similar to its competitor. Is this an attempt to replicate the formula that caused the explosive growth of TikTok? Pretty crazy, huh?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And though I believe these are all radical decisions that could compromise their brand identity, they have good reasons to worry.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not surprising that these updates are rattling longtime users. If you scroll through the comments sections on recent posts\u2014or pretty much anywhere people yell on the internet\u2014you can see plenty of pushback. There\u2019s this undercurrent of nostalgia for \u201cold Instagram\u201d (as if that\u2019s even a clear thing), mixed with some resistance to having every interaction nudged toward video and virality. It\u2019s probably not a new phenomenon, this pining for the old way, but the sheer volume of complaints feels different this time. Whether or not Instagram walks back some features will probably depend on how much noise users actually make versus just threatening to quit.<\/p>\n<p>From a brand or creator\u2019s perspective, though, the uncertainty is kind of exhausting. Testing new formats is great, but if you\u2019re trying to plan a campaign or manage a publishing calendar, having the rules switch up every couple of months makes things unnecessarily tricky. It\u2019s like, sure, adapt or die, but even chameleons need to rest. No one wants to put hours into a multi-video series only for it to be shoved down a new content chute without warning. But hey, that\u2019s sort of the price of free platforms\u2014they change the rules, and you just have to figure out your next move.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok became the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/tiktok-most-downloaded-app-in-q1-2022\/447790\/#:~:text=The%20short%2Dform%20video%20sharing,1%20through%20March%2031%2C%202022.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most downloaded app of 2022<\/a>. Also, it passed Youtube, Facebook and Instagram\u2019s records for time spent in 2021, and it&#8217;s expected to grow up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/tiktok-beats-facebook-in-time-spent-per-user\/392643\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">325% year over year<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Globally, they have <a href=\"https:\/\/wallaroomedia.com\/blog\/social-media\/tiktok-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">over 1 billion monthly active users<\/a>, and it is expected to hit 1.5 billion by the end of 2022.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, this is not easy to beat. But does this mean that Instagram\u2019s offer is not relevant anymore? In my opinion, both platforms may share audiences, but users behave differently. And that\u2019s the essence of social media!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t go to Facebook to share the same content you find on Instagram. Even as users, we follow different accounts depending on the platform. If I want a quick tutorial, I don\u2019t go to YouTube anymore, I put a hashtag on TikTok and voil\u00e1!<\/p>\n<p><strong>User behavior data must be the pillar of any strategic decision<\/strong>. And hopefully, Instagram is considering that.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What might be the impact of all these changes?<\/h2>\n<p>All these changes in the platform leave many users in doubt.<\/p>\n<p>If Instagram\u2019s objective is to improve the experience of content creators, how will these changes benefit them?<\/p>\n<p>Without a doubt, the adjustments in the video formats for Reels have complications. That\u2019s why companies, brands, and creators will need to prepare to <strong>work with vertical video only<\/strong>. Pretty much anything that isn&#8217;t a Reel won&#8217;t fit on the deck (literally). Also, this will definitely impact the user experience, just like the vertical home feeds they are also testing.<\/p>\n<p>This whole scenario reminds me of a great quote by Bonnie Gillespie:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhen you try to be everything to everyone, you accomplish being nothing to anyone\u201d.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I believe with all these changes, the platform is overlooking something very important: <strong>brand essence<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The question remains, is it worth it? Now more than ever, it is important that you keep track of the changes in your audience and rethink your strategy for this platform.<\/p>\n<p>If your audience stops engaging with the platform after all the updates, there&#8217;s no point in reinforcing the strategy further.
