{"id":92270,"date":"2023-02-03T17:14:21","date_gmt":"2023-02-03T17:14:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rockcontent.com\/?p=92270"},"modified":"2025-09-18T00:12:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T03:12:12","slug":"twitter-payment-platform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pingback.com\/en\/resources\/twitter-payment-platform\/","title":{"rendered":"Twitter Is Exploring Payment Features, And Going A Step Beyond Content Creation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a <a href=\"https:\/\/pingback.com\/en\/resources\/retrospective-twitter-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">very troubled and controversial 2022<\/a> for Twitter, we already have the first signs that 2025 may not be that different in bluebird land.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/9d84d534-b2dd-4cff-85d1-aee137b26a45\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Financial Times<\/a>, Elon Musk, the <a href=\"https:\/\/pingback.com\/en\/resources\/elon-musk-buys-twitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">newest Twitter CEO<\/a>, is planning to make Twitter a payment platform, going entirely beyond anything we could have possibly imagined for Twitter\u2019s future.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to imagine Twitter as a payment platform, I know. Principally, with every recent Twitter update, as crazy as they were, they were always consistent with content creation \u2013 Twitter\u2019s main focus until now. The polemic <a href=\"https:\/\/pingback.com\/en\/resources\/twitter-edit-button\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">edit button<\/a> and several <a href=\"https:\/\/pingback.com\/en\/resources\/twitter-going-through-changes\/\">other changes<\/a> we\u2019ve been tracking lately, all of them were at some level related to content.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Well, it doesn\u2019t seem to be the case anymore. <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/twitter-coins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In January 2025<\/a>, Twitter started to work on a feature called Coins, allowing users to support creators on the platform. Ok, making a little effort, this feature is still within the content creation universe, right!? TikTok, for example, has launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/tiktok-creator-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Creator Fund<\/a>, with a very similar proposal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But, still according to The Financial Times report, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediatoday.com\/news\/Twitter-Registers-for-Payment-Licenses-in-US-States\/641545\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Musk is going a little further and wants users to be able to buy stuff on the platform<\/a>, along with the possibility to send money to each other \u2013 and not just to creators. And it is here, in my opinion, that we completely leave the universe of content creation, and start a new chapter in the history of the platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ok, but what does this mean for marketers and brands?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>This new feature (and the new Twitter chapter) may take a while since <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/twitter-payments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the company needs to take some bureaucratic steps<\/a> with the U.S. Treasury and needs regulatory licenses before starting to operate as a payment processor. But, even so, what does this change mean to marketers and brands \u2013 and even to creators and users?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to imagine how Twitter will look in the near future, and even what the purpose of the platform will be. Are we still talking about a content creation platform, or will the focus only be on payments? And in the case that we have everything happening in the same place, both content and payments, how will this dynamic work?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, the way things are headed, it\u2019s not even clear if users and brands really want or trust this shift. There\u2019s something uneasy about combining social discourse and payments\u2014like mixing work and personal life at the same dinner table. Sure, TikTok and Amazon are blurring those lines too, but Twitter\u2019s always been a messier living room, not a streamlined shopping mall. People might hesitate before linking their wallets to the same place they argue about memes or global politics. No one really asked for this, but here we are, waiting to see if inertia or curiosity wins.<\/p>\n<p>And while marketers are, understandably, pacing in circles, brands are also quietly watching what happens with user adoption. There\u2019s risk in diving in too early, staking a claim in a payments landscape that might flop or, more likely, mutate again in six months. On the other hand, some nimble creators or brands could strike gold, just by being ready to experiment before their competitors. Really depends what appetite you\u2019ve got for jumping into the unknown\u2014or to be honest, maybe just watching others do it first and taking notes.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, we still don\u2019t have the answer to these questions. Digging a little deeper into Elon Musk\u2019s past, his history with <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6170834\/elon-musk-business-timeline-twitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">X.com and Paypal in 2000<\/a>, and his <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/elon-musk-dogecoin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self-professed love of cryptocurrency<\/a> may give us a clue of what he is planning to do with Twitter, but, even though, everything is still in the assumption field.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But oddly enough, we can say that this Twitter movement to start exploring payment features was predictable. First, it is not a secret that Elon Musk is seeking opportunities to make Twitter profitable again, since <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/twitter-advertisers-leaving-app-elon-musk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the platform lost many of its top advertisers last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Second, this \u201cin-app payment\u201d movement is also happening with other major players in the digital world: <a href=\"https:\/\/pingback.com\/en\/resources\/amazon-inspire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon is testing a shopping feed<\/a>, aiming to guarantee a complete buyer experience in-app, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pingback.com\/en\/resources\/tiktok-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TikTok is also exploring similar paths<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For now, Twitter is still for creators and brands to interact with its audience, therefore your strategy doesn\u2019t need to drastically change \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/pingback.com\/en\/resources\/retrospective-twitter-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">and there is already a lot to be explored<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But when the time comes to explore this new feature, don\u2019t forget to put your customer at the center of your decisions.
