The Charleston Battery defeated the Toronto Lynx today (Sunday, June 9, 2002) by a score of one goal to none, on the road at Centennial Stadium in Toronto Canada. Midfielder, Kevin Anderson won the game with a headed goal in the 55th minute. The win improves Charleston to a record of 9-1-1, 41 points and back to 1st place in the Southeast Division. Toronto drops to 1-8-1 and remains in last place in the Northeast Division. The match was the second of a two-game weekend series that saw the Battery defeat the Lynx by an identical score, at Blackbaud Stadium on Friday night.
The game began at a fast pace with both teams eager to earn an early advantage. Charleston, staring with Paul Conway and Steve Klein up front had the better of the early exchanges but did not truly threaten Toronto until the 30th minute.
After a well-worked move, the ball was passed to midfielder, Ryan Trout, wide on the left flank. Trout faked his marker out then drove the ball diagonally towards the back post. Conway read the move and slipped free of his defender. He met the cross well but his header flashed wide of the target.
Toronto out-shot Charleston 5-1 in the first period, but goalkeeper, Dusty Hudock only had to make one save, the rest of the goal attempts were either wide or high.
Ten minutes after the break, the Battery broke the deadlock. Midfielder, Morgan Zeba received the ball just outside the box on the right side. He glanced up and saw Kevin Anderson breaking free inside the penalty-area. Zeba whipped the ball into the box, straight to Anderson. Anderson snapped a header into the goal past the diving keeper, Theo Zagar.
With the one goal advantage, Charleston consolidated and began playing possession soccer. Mac Cozier was brought on for Paul Conway and Raul Diaz Arce replaced Linval Dixon. As time wore on the win looked more and more likely. The Battery ended the game a man short after defender, John Wilson was red-carded in the 73rd minute, but despite the numerical advantage the Lynx never seriously threatened Hudock’s goal.
Charleston now leads the entire A-League on points and also earned its league-leading 8th shutout of the 2002 season.
