Charleston improves to 5-1-2, 20 points and remains in first position in the Southeast. Syracuse drops to 5-3, 15 points. |
The first opportunity fell to Syracuse in the 11th minute. Forward, Tony Medina swung a corner-kick in from the near side. Brazilian midfielder, Neto met the cross but his header flashed wide of the target. |
Battery midfielder, Ted Chronopoulos had two chances in succession midway through the half. In the 26th minute he forced Salty Dogs, goalkeeper Mike Gabb to make a save after sending in a fierce half-volley, from the left side of the penalty-area. Then in the 33rd minute he was denied again after heading a Blair Scoullar cross at the goal. |
Veteran Battery defender Mark Watson was forced out of the game in the 38th minute after forward, Tony Medina fouled him off the ball. Medina received a yellow-card for the infraction. |
In the 44th minute Scoullar almost scored but his shot from inside the 6-yard box was well saved by Gabb. |
In injury time at the end of the period, Battery goalkeeper Dusty Hudock made two excellent saves to keep the scores level. After batting down a driven shot from outside the box, he made a quick reaction-save, diving to his left to prevent Medina from slotting home. |
In the 66th minute, Hudock was called on again, this time turning a sharp drive around the post with a diving save. |
In stoppage time at the end of regulation the Battery came close once more. A corner-kick was sent into the middle and after scramble substitute, forward Chris Goos, saw his shot parried away by the Syracuse defense. |
The winner came via an own-goal in the 3rd minute of overtime as Kembles header stranded Gabb who watched helplessly as the ball went into his goal. |
