The Charleston Battery defeated its Southeast Division rival the Atlanta Silverbacks tonight (Friday, June 20, 2003) by a score of three goals to none at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 3,497. The Battery improves to 8-2-2, 26 points and remains in 1st place. The Silverbacks drop to 1-8-4, 7 points, 5th place.

Charleston scored all three of its goals in a first half that saw them outshoot Atlanta 9-0. The first goal came in the 9th minute from a corner-kick. Defender, Mark Watson, kept the ball in play from the corner, heading it down at the back-post. Midfielder, Steve Klein, controlled Watson’s pass and drilled the ball past Silverbacks goalkeeper, Bryheem Hancock into the goal.

The Battery doubled its lead in the 20th minute. Midfielder, Ryan Trout picked the ball up just inside the Atlanta half. He dribbled goalward beating three Atlanta players. As he reached the edge of the 18-yard box he fired a shot that cannoned off the inside of the right-hand post and into the goal.

The third goal came in stoppage time at the end of the half. Atlanta half-cleared a cross but it fell to the feet of midfielder, Ted Chronopoulos. Chronopoulos looked up and quickly whipped the ball into the middle to striker, Josh Henderson. Henderson met the cross and snapped a header past Hancock for the goal.

In the second half Atlanta forced two saves from Charleston goalkeeper Dusty Hudock. The first off a Carlos Parra shot, and the second a diving save to deny forward, John Nusum.

Substitute, midfielder, David Lara almost scored a fourth for the Battery but his bullet-shot in the 89th minute was turned away brilliantly by substitute Atlanta keeper, Anthony Topkah.
