The Charleston Battery extended its lead in the Southeast Division tonight (Saturday, June 14, 2003) with a 2-0 win over the Charlotte Eagles at Waddell High School in front of 794. The Battery improves to 7-2-2, 23 points, the Eagles drop to 2-5-6, 11 points.

The Battery had an early chance to take the lead in the 2nd minute. Forward, Josh Henderson received the ball at the edge of the penalty-area. He managed to get the shot off under pressure from the Charlotte defense but his effort missed right.

Charleston broke the deadlock in the 26th minute. Midfielder, Ryan Trout made a good run down the right flank. He crossed the ball into the middle where it was only half-cleared by the Eagles. Midfielder, Barry Moore was first to the loose ball and drove it past Charlotte goalkeeper, Neal Andrews into the back of the net.

Three minutes later the Battery doubled its lead. This time Charleston pressure resulted in the ball squirting out to midfielder, Ted Chronopoulos at the edge of the 18-yard box. He took a touch to control the ball then struck a half-volley into the right-hand corner of the goal.

In the 42nd minute Charleston goalkeeper, Dusty Hudock made a good save after, Eagles midfielder Jose Gomez got behind the Battery back four. Hudock came quickly off his line and smothered the shot with a foot-save.

In the 58th minute, Chronopoulos made a strong run down the left side. He whipped a cross into the middle, but Henderson directed his header just wide of the goal.

In the 63rd minute Eagles defender, Hayden Woodworth tried his luck from outside the box. His driven shot sailed high and wide.

The Battery continued to pressure late in the game. In the 73rd minute substitute midfielder, Bryan Hoy broke a tackle and slipped the ball inside to Blair Scoullar. Scoullar carried the ball to the edge of the area before firing a shot on target. The ball deflected on the way through but was saved on his line by Andrews.
