The Charleston Battery lost to the Richmond Kickers tonight (Saturday, August 16, 2003) at Blackbaud Stadium by a score of two goals to one in front of, 4,571. Richmond came from behind to defeat the Battery dropping Charleston to a record of 12-6-7, 43 points still good for 1st place in the Southeast Division. Richmond improves to 11-7-7, 40 points and remains in third place. |
The Battery took an early lead in the 14th minute. Midfielder, Ryan Trout sent a throw-in towards the near post. Striker, Paul Conway flicked the ball on and his partner at forward, Josh Henderson turned it into the goal with his heel. |
Kevin Jeffrey hit the post for Richmond in the 33rd minute after he broke free and was one-on-one with Charleston goalkeeper, Chris Doyle. Doyle forced an early shot and the ball cannoned off the right-hand post. |
Four minutes into the second half Richmond equalized from the penalty spot. The Kickers were awarded the penalty after Gregg Simmonds was challenged awkwardly by Linval Dixon. Kevin Jeffrey slotted the ball to the right of Doyle for the goal. |
In the 54th minute Josh Henderson fired the ball past Richmond goalkeeper, Ronnie Pascale but was denied by the woodwork as the ball glanced off the post. |
Richmond scored the game winner in the 84th minute. Greg Simmonds broke free down the right flank and as Doyle approached he drove the ball past Doyle and into the open goal. |
