In the last minute of the half it appeared that Charleston had drawn level as midfielder, Blair Scoullar headed a Conway cross into the goal. The Battery celebrations were cut short however as referee, Mike Stutt disallowed the goal for a push inside the box.

In the second half Virginia Beach opened a four goal lead with two goals from forward Dante Washington and a second from Aguilera.

Battery substitute, Chris Goos pulled a goal back for Charleston in the 66th minute. He received the ball from substitute forward Steve Klein and slotted the ball into the goal from the edge of the area.

Charleston scored again in the 86th minute as Klein headed home a Ryan Trout cross. That goal leveled the aggregate score series and would have sent the game to penalty kicks. However Virginia Beach defender, Russell Hutchinson replied with the Mariners fifth goal of the match in stoppage time at the end of regulation.
