The Charleston Battery lost to the reigning A-League Champions, the Rochester Raging Rhinos tonight (Thursday, August 1, 2002) by a score of two goals to one in front of 2,854 at Blackbaud Stadium. Paul Conway scored in the first period but the Battery conceded two goals in the second half as the Rhinos came from behind to win. | ||
The Battery drops to 15-3-3, 68 points and remains in first place in the Southeast Division. Rochester improves to 12-6-2, 50 points good for first in the Northeast Division. | ||
The first goal was scored in the 13th minute of the first half. Defender, Terry Phelan drove a free kick forward from the halfway line. Midfielder, John Jones met the ball and snapped a header down at the edge of the box. Striker Paul Conway collected the header and pulled the ball onto his right-foot. With a defender close behind, Conway turned quickly and curled the ball into the right hand corner of the goal. It was Conway’s team-leading seventh goal of the season. | ||
Rochester brought the game level in the 69th minute. Battery keeper, Dusty Hudock caught the ball from a Rochester corner kick, but couldn’t hold it under pressure in the 6-yard box. The loose ball dropped behind him and Rhinos defender, Kalin Bankov poked it home to tie the game. | ||
Ten minutes later Rochester scored the winning goal. Forward Gregg Simmonds, slipped the ball behind the Charleston defense wide on the left hand side.
