The Charleston Battery defeated the Toronto Lynx tonight with (Friday, June 7, 2002) a 100th minute golden goal from striker, Paul Conway. 2,942 braved the rain and watched as the Battery dominated, but struggled to find the net. The win improves Charleston to 7-1-1, 37 points and 1st place in the A-League Southeast Division. Toronto drops to 1-6-1, last in the Northeast Division. Both teams travel to Toronto on Sunday for the second of the two-game weekend series, kick off is set for 4:00 pm (WTMZ 910 AM).
Charleston started the game well and dominated the first period. Defender, Mark Watson came close with a header in the 20th minute. Midfielder, Justin Evans also nearly scored in the 43rd minute. His half volley was well saved by Toronto keeper, Theo Zagar.
The Lynx’s best chance of the half was a counter-attack move that resulted in a hard drive from right-back, Adrian Serioux. Battery keeper, Dusty Hudock got down quickly and made a good save.
In the second period it was more Battery pressure. Substitute, forward, Mac Cozier and midfielder, Steve Klein combined to put Conway away in the 54th minute. His shot was saved by a diving Zagar. Two minutes later Morgan Zeba had a shot scrambled away after Ryan Trout had played a good cross into the middle.
As Overtime approached, Charleston increased the intensity and Cozier almost won the game three minutes from time. He found some space in the box but could only direct his header high over the goal.
It took 10 minutes of sudden-death overtime before the Battery could finally break the deadlock. Substitute midfielder, Kevin Anderson played a looping cross into the box. Paul Conway met it early and headed it on target. The keeper made a good save but could not hold onto the ball and as it squirted free, Conway lashed it home. The final score, Charleston Battery 1 – Toronto Lynx 0.
