To finish our review on linking words (conjunctions), this Friday we will organize the most important linking words of contrast into three main categories:

  1. Linking word + subject + verb;
  2. Linking word + noun/pronoun/gerund;
  3. Linking word separated out by itself.

Linking word + subject + verb

Even though the United States is still the economic and military superpower, it can no longer dictate the agenda of international organizations as it did in the past.”

Other linking words: Although, Though, While, and Whereas.

Linking word + noun/pronoun/gerund

Despite being a dictatorship, Saudi Arabia has close ties with most of Western democracies because of its oil reserves.”

Other linking words: In spite of, Regardless of, and Notwithstanding

* We prefer to use the preposition/conjunction notwithstanding in an inverted sentence:

“Being a dictatorship notwithstanding, Saudi Arabia has close ties with most of Western democracies because of its oil reserves.”

Linking word separated out by itself

Brazil has one of the greatest economies in the world. However, inequality persists as a hindrance for social development.”

Other linking words: Nevertheless, Nonetheless, Though, Regardless, By contrast, and Even so (this final term can only be used at the beginning of a sentence).
