Benito Mussolini looked for help from Adolf Hitler, who sent a little German power to Tripoli under Directive 22 (11 January).

The Afrika Korps (Generalleutnant Erwin Rommel) was officially under Italian order , as Italy was the principle Axis power in the Mediterranean and North Africa. In the spring of 1941 , Rommel drove Operation Sonnenblume , which pushed the Allies back to Egypt aside from the Siege of Tobruk at the port.

Toward the finish of 1941 , Axis powers were crushed in Operation Crusader and resigned again to El Agheila. In mid 1942 Axis powers drove the Allies back again , at that point caught Tobruk after the Battle of Gazala however neglected to obliterate their adversaries.

The Axis attacked Egypt and the Allies withdrew to El Alamein , where the Eighth Army faced two cautious conflicts at that point crushed the Axis powers in the Second Battle of El Alamein in October 1942.

The Eighth Army drove Axis powers out of Libya to Tunisia , which was attacked from the west by the Allied First Army in Operation Torch. In the Tunisian lobby the leftover Axis powers gave up to the consolidated Allied powers in May 1943.

The Western Desert Force (renamed Cyracom and later the Eighth Army) was drained in mid 1941 to send units to Greece, instead of complete the victory of Libya , similarly as German soldiers and Italian fortifications showed up.

English Commonwealth and Empire troops delivered after the finish of the East Africa Campaign were shipped off Egypt and by summer , the enduring Commonwealth troops had gotten back from Greece , Crete and Syria. From the finish of 1941 , expanding measures of gear and staff , including US supplies and tanks , showed up for the Eighth Army.

The Axis never defeated the inventory requirements restricting the size of their territory and flying corps in North Africa and the desert war turned into a sideshow for Germany , when the normal fast finish of Operation Barbarossa , the attack of the Soviet Union, was not accomplished.
