The Charleston Battery defeated the Atlanta Silverbacks tonight (Saturday, July 27, 2002) at Dekalb Memorial Stadium in Atlanta, by a score of two goals to none. John Jones scored a goal in each half to lead the Battery to its 15th A-League win. |
With the win Charleston improves to a record of 15-2-3, and remains in first place in the Southeast Division. Atlanta drops to 12-9-1, 56 points, second position in the Division. |
The match was the second of a back-to-back series; both sides played to a scoreless tie at Blackbaud Stadium, Friday night. |
The Battery opened the scoring late in the first period. Defender, Linval Dixon drove a free kick into the box from just inside the Atlanta half. John Jones rose to meet it and powered a header into the right hand corner of the goal, past Silverbacks goalkeeper, Cole Burgman. |
In the 60th minute Charleston doubled its lead with a second goal from Jones. Battery pressure resulted in a corner kick. The ball was swung into the middle where defender, Steve Klein directed it into the 6-yard box. Jones reacted to the loose ball first turning quickly to slot it into the goal. |
With the two goal cushion Charleston’s defense dominated the remainder of the game. Goalkeeper, Dusty Hudock made two saves, recording his league-leading 11th shutout of the season. |
