The Charleston Battery defeated the Richmond Kickers tonight (Tuesday, July 8, 2003) by a score of two goals to one at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 3,313. Paul Conway and former Kicker, Josh Henderson supplied the goals as the Battery became the first team in the A-League to reach 11 wins. Charleston improves to 11-3-3, 36 points, 1st place in the Southeast Division. Richmond remains in 2nd place, dropping to 8-6-3, 27 points.

Charleston dominated the first half. John Wilson had a chance in the 4th minute but his shot flew wide of the target.

In the 11th minute the Battery broke through. Midfielder, Ted Chronopoulos intercepted a Richmond clearance just inside the half. He sent a curling ball forward into the path of striker, Paul Conway. Conway took a touch into the box and then hit a right-footed drive past Richmond goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale.

In the 19th minute, Josh Henderson almost scored the Battery’s second. He held the ball up at the edge of the box with three defenders on him. He managed to squeeze past them and into space just inside the penalty-area, but his hard shot was well-saved by Pascale.

In stoppage time at the end of the half, Kevin Jeffrey came close to tieing the game. He took a ball down on his chest and hit a sharp volley at the goal. Battery goalkeeper Dusty Hudock dove to his right and turned the ball around the post.

In the 50th minute Charleston doubled its lead. This time the ball was worked out to Ryan Trout on the right-wing. He swept the ball into the middle where Henderson met it and snapped a header past Pascale into the top-corner.

Richmond fought back with a goal in the 63rd minute. Jeffrey poked the ball home from 6-yards out after the Battery failed to clear a Tony Williams cross. The final score, Charleston Battery 2 – Richmond Kickers 1.
